Before you begin, understand what you're protecting against:
- Energy vampires: people who drain your energy through constant negativity, drama, or neediness
- Psychic attack: intentional or unintentional projection of negative energy toward you (jealousy, anger, ill-wishing)
- Empathic overwhelm: absorbing emotions from crowds, sensitive situations, or troubled individuals
- Environmental negativity: the accumulated stress and anxiety in certain spaces
- Your own negative self-talk and limiting beliefs
All of these require shielding. Now, let's build your shield:
Find a quiet space where you won't be disturbed for at least 15 minutes. Sit or stand in a comfortable position, spine straight. Close your eyes.
Begin with deep breathing. Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat until you feel centered and calm. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and brings you into the present moment.
Now visualize your aura—the electromagnetic field that surrounds your physical body. Everyone has one, whether you can see it or not. Imagine it as an egg-shaped field of light extending about arm's length around your body in all directions. What color is it? Healthy auras are usually bright and clear. If yours seems muddy or torn, that's okay—we're about to fix that.
First, repair and strengthen. Visualize brilliant white or golden light flowing down from the crown of your head, filling your entire aura, brightening it, repairing any holes or tears, pushing out any foreign energy. See your aura becoming vibrant, strong, whole.
Now we add the mirrors. Visualize the outer surface of your aura becoming covered in small mirrors, all facing outward. Some people see it like disco ball tiles, others like a knight's mirror-polished armor. These mirrors will reflect any negative energy back to its source. This isn't about harming anyone—what they send out returns to them so they can learn from it.
Important: The mirrors face outward. You don't want to be reflecting your own thoughts and emotions back to yourself in an endless loop.
Next, add the purple flame. Visualize a layer of violet or purple flame surrounding the mirrored surface of your aura. This is the flame of transmutation—it transforms negative energy into neutral or positive energy. So even if something gets past your mirrors (and some things will—shields aren't perfect), the flame purifies it before it reaches you.
Some practitioners also add additional layers based on their needs:
- A layer of thorns or spikes to actively repel energy vampires
- A layer of water to wash away negativity
- A layer of earth to ground excess energy
- Specific symbols of protection from your tradition (pentacles, crosses, eyes of Horus, runes)
Choose what resonates. More isn't always better—a simple, well-maintained shield is more effective than a complex one you forget to refresh.
Now seal it with affirmation. Place your hand over your heart and declare with conviction:
'I am protected. I am sovereign. I am whole.
I decide what energy I allow into my space.
I am surrounded by divine protection.
Only love and light may reach me.
All negativity is reflected, transmuted, and neutralized.
I am safe. I am shielded. I am free.
So it is and so it shall be.'
Feel the shield activate. You might sense a subtle shift—a feeling of being wrapped in a protective bubble, a slight temperature change, a sense of energetic boundaries clicking into place. Trust what you perceive.
This shield must be refreshed daily, ideally in the morning before you encounter other people. It weakens throughout the day as it does its job. With practice, you can refresh it in under a minute—just close your eyes, take three deep breaths, visualize your shield bright and strong, and reaffirm your protection.
Note: Shields can be permeable to allow specific people or energies through. You can intentionally create a 'door' in your shield for loved ones while keeping it sealed against everyone else. Advanced practitioners learn to adjust their shields on the fly based on the situation.
Signs your shield needs refreshing: sudden exhaustion around others, feeling overwhelmed in crowds, absorbing others' emotions, physical sensations of being energetically penetrated, bad dreams, or simply feeling 'off.'
Remember: Shielding is a skill. It gets easier and more automatic with practice. Eventually, maintaining a shield becomes as natural as breathing.
